Produce That Produces Ethylene Gas

Pears and apples produce ethylene gas.

We want to make sure the produce you get in your Grace Brothers weekly CSA bag lasts a long time before you eat it…

One reason that some fruits and veggies might go bad faster than others is that they are stored with other produce that creates ethylene gas. This odorless, colorless gas promotes ripening. It’s actually used to help ripen produce that isn’t picked at peak freshness and has to travel far distances to its intended eaters.

The produce in our CSA bags is all grown within 100 miles of our North Royalton shop… and picked ripe.

But if you store fruits or veggies that create the gas with produce that’s especially sensitive to it, your produce will go bad faster.
